I hope everyone is staying warm in this ridiculously cold weather. Seriously. Its so cold it hurts. This morning, I had to feel my face to make sure it was there. With that being said, here is a review that wont give you the chills.
Bearded Brothers Raw snack bars are raw, vegan, gluten free, dairy, free, soy free, and organic. I had the opportunity to try four of their five flavors and I will review each one from my most favorite to least favorite. Before I get to the actual review of the snack bars, I will tell you that I really like the packaging that the bars come on. I know its just basic packaging, but I just love how they don’t go out of their way to over emphasize and exaggerate their product. Which is something I like allot. Even though, I am one who loves pretty colors. But I think this bar is mostly a manly man bar. After all, there are two bearded men on the bar packaging.
With all that being said, lets get to the bar flavors. The flavors I got the try were Colossal Coconut Mango, Fabulous Ginger Peach, Bodacious Blueberry Vanilla, and Mighty Maca Chocolate. And they are all under 250 calories.
The Colossal Coconut Mango was my favorite. It has Organic Dates, Organic Almonds, Organic Dried Mango, Organic Coconut Flakes, Organic Chia Seeds, and Sea Salt. It’s fruity and not loaded with dates, as know they give me anxiety. *wink wink. I can taste both the coconut and mango. The Mango adds something refreshing and different to the bar.
The more important part about a raw bar is tasting the other fruits and ingredients besides the base. Which Is the dates. While dates, (gonna give you a little info on dates and flavor profiles and pairings for a sec), are delicious and good for you, they are also a huge raw vegan staple. Why? Because they are sticky, sweet, have lots of nutritional value, and can hold things together. Which is why dates are commonly used and preferred for making raw vegan dessert items.
However, because they do have some type of natural flavoring to them, sometimes they can take over the whole bar. And being that practically all raw vegan snack, meal, or energy bars start off with dates as the base can make it rather difficult in this particular market. Why one can say, “If you tasted one, you tasted them all”.
Too bad that’s not that type of review. Bearded Brothers has it going on. You can taste the dates, but you can also taste the other items in the bar. Keep in mind that this is a compliment to the company and not an insult.
My next favorite is the Fabulous Ginger Peach. It’s made with Organic Dates, Organic Almonds, Organic Walnuts, Organic Dried Peaches*, Organic Fresh Pressed Ginger, Organic Chia Seeds, and Sea Salt. When I say this bar has a kick, there is definitely a kick. The soft yet fruity tones of the peach stood it’s ground with the ginger. I could taste the peach, I would smell it. I got the undertones and high tones of it on my pallete. The ginger was a bit spicy, but nothing anyone can’t handle.
No onto the Bodacious Blueberry Vanilla. It has : Organic Dates, Organic Almonds, Organic Vanilla Rice Protein, Organic Dried Blueberries, Organic Chia Seeds, and Sea Salt. While this was not one of my favorites, I will tell you what I thought about it. This was one the less fruitier bars to me. I tasted the blueberries and the vanilla and I liked them. Just not for this bar. I’m not going to say that it’s bad. It just wasn’t for me. None the less, it was still good.
The Mighty Maca Chocolate however was not my cup of tea. It has s: Organic Dates, Organic Almonds, Organic Cashews, Organic Maca Powder, Organic Cacao Nibs (Crushed Organic Cacao Beans, Organic Coconut Palm Nectar, Sea Salt), Organic Evaporated Coconut Palm Nectar, Mexican Cocoa* (Dutch Cocoa, Indonesian Cinnamon, Ceylon Cinnamon and Vanilla Powder), Organic Chia Seeds, and Sea Salt. Personally. I’m hard to get with chocolate. I like being talked to. And a guy with a good sense of humor.
With that being said, chocolate is not really for me. It tastes good and I love the many dimensions that they too with all the different types of chocolate. I feel like they really put thought into the idea of using different chocolates. I say that because this is not something you always see with raw vegan food bars. I love the chia seeds and love it when a company adds more nutritional value wherever they can. I say give this one a try.
